Rukiga District.
Tears, prayers and heartfelt tributes filled the air at Kakatunda Village in Bukinda, Rukiga District, as hundreds of mourners gathered to bid farewell to Mzee Deogratious Ndabiroha, whose remarkable life of faith, sacrifice and unwavering commitment to family was celebrated during his burial.

Mzee Ndabiroha, who passed away at the age of 97, was remembered as a humble, hardworking and God-fearing man whose legacy will continue to inspire generations. Family members, religious leaders, local authorities and residents described him as a pillar of wisdom whose life demonstrated selflessness, resilience and devotion to both God and family.
The funeral Mass was led by Rev. Fr. John Byamukama, the Parish Priest of Bukinda Parish in Kabale Diocese, assisted by Rev. Fr. Benedict Mubangizi. In a moving homily, Fr. Byamukama challenged Christians to strive to live lives of purpose and significance, emphasizing that every person has a unique mission entrusted to them by God.

"He had something important to offer this world. He was not a man who simply lived and passed on," Fr. Byamukama said. "Many people come into this world without making a meaningful impact, but Mzee Deogratious represented and honoured Christ through his life. That is why today we are not only mourning his passing but also celebrating the life he lived."
Reflecting on the first reading from the Book of Isaiah, the priest reminded mourners that God's promises never fail those who put their trust in Him. He explained that while death brings sorrow, it also offers hope to believers because Christ has prepared eternal life for those who remain faithful.
"The message from Isaiah assures us that God never abandons those who trust in Him," he said. "As Christians, we celebrate the hope of resurrection because Christ has opened the way to eternal life. Every person will one day receive a reward according to how they lived while on earth."
The priest encouraged mourners to use the occasion to reflect on their own lives and priorities, urging them to cultivate faith, love and service to others so that they too may leave behind a legacy worthy of remembrance.

One of the most touching moments during the burial came as the deceased's children paid tribute to their father. They described him as an extraordinary parent whose love and sacrifice shaped their lives.
According to the family, Mzee Ndabiroha lost his wife nearly 30 years ago. Despite the loss, he made the difficult decision not to remarry, choosing instead to dedicate the rest of his life to raising his children with love, discipline and unwavering commitment.
"He sacrificed his own personal comfort to ensure that we lacked nothing," a family representative said. "He became both father and mother to us, guiding us through life with wisdom and unconditional love. We shall forever remain grateful for the values he instilled in us."
The family noted that of his eight children, five survive him and have pledged to continue living according to the principles their father taught them. They also expressed gratitude to relatives, friends, neighbours and well-wishers who supported them throughout the funeral arrangements.
"Our father died a happy man because he witnessed the growth of his family and saw his children become responsible members of society," the family representative added.
The burial also attracted political leaders, including the LC5 Chairperson of Rukiga District, who addressed mourners on matters affecting the local community. He reassured traders that the ongoing enforcement of the Trade Order regulations within town councils is intended to promote orderly urban development rather than punish hardworking business people.
He emphasized that only those who fail to comply with the established guidelines should be concerned and pledged to continue advocating for policies that enable traders in Bukinda and across the district to conduct business in a conducive environment.
As hymns echoed across the hills of Kakatunda and family members took one final look at their beloved patriarch, Mzee Deogratious Ndabiroha was laid to rest at his ancestral home.
His life stands as a testimony that true greatness is measured not by wealth or public recognition but by faithfulness, sacrifice and the positive impact one leaves on family, community and society.
For many who gathered to honour him, the funeral was more than a farewell—it was a celebration of a man whose 97-year journey reflected resilience, love and an enduring commitment to Christian values. His legacy will continue to inspire those who knew him, reminding future generations that a life lived in service to God and others is a life truly well lived.
