Kabale Diocese Prepares for a Historic Triple Celebration of Faith, Thanksgiving and New Beginnings

KABALE, UGANDA — On Saturday, 22 August 2026, history will be written at Our Lady of Good Shepherd Rushoroza Cathedral as the Catholic Diocese of Kabale gathers for one of the most significant celebrations since its establishment in 1966.
In an extraordinary convergence of faith and gratitude, the Diocese will simultaneously commemorate its Diamond Jubilee (60 years), celebrate the Annual Diocesan Thanksgiving Day, and witness the ordination of 13 priests and 10 deacons. The event is expected to attract thousands of pilgrims, clergy, religious, government leaders and guests from across Uganda and beyond.

Sixty Years of Grace
Founded on 17 April 1966, Kabale Diocese has grown into one of Uganda's vibrant local Churches, becoming a beacon of evangelization, education, healthcare, social development and priestly formation throughout the Kigezi region.
For six decades, generations of priests, religious, catechists and lay faithful have carried the Gospel into homes, schools and communities, nurturing a strong Catholic identity that continues to flourish today.
The Jubilee therefore offers more than a celebration of history. It is a moment to thank God for His abundant blessings while renewing the Diocese's missionary commitment for generations to come.
Honouring a Rich Episcopal Legacy
The anniversary also pays tribute to the shepherds who have guided the Diocese through different eras.
From the pioneering leadership of Rt. Rev. Gervase Nkalanga, followed by Rt. Rev. Barnabas Halem’Imana, Rt. Rev. Robert Mary Gay, and Rt. Rev. Callist Rubaramira, each bishop has left a lasting mark on the spiritual and pastoral growth of Kabale Diocese.
Following Bishop Rubaramira's retirement upon reaching the canonical age, Pope Leo XIV appointed Msgr. Bonaventure Bosco Gubazire, M.Afr. as the fifth Bishop of Kabale Diocese. Until the Bishop-elect takes canonical possession of the Diocese, Bishop Rubaramira continues serving as Apostolic Administrator, ensuring a smooth pastoral transition.
Thanksgiving at the Heart of the Celebration
Beyond the Jubilee, the Diocese will also celebrate its annual Thanksgiving Day, bringing together families, parishes, institutions, movements and individuals in gratitude for God's providence throughout the year.
The celebration reflects the Church's enduring conviction that every blessing comes from God and that thanksgiving strengthens both faith and communion among believers.

A Harvest of Vocations
Perhaps the most moving highlight of the day will be the ordination of 13 new priests and 10 deacons.
Their joyful response to God's call stands as compelling evidence that priestly and religious vocations continue to flourish within Kabale Diocese.
Through the laying on of hands and the Prayer of Ordination, the new priests will begin ministries centred on celebrating the Eucharist, administering the Sacraments, preaching the Gospel and shepherding God's people. The newly ordained deacons will begin their ministry of service as they prepare for priesthood.
Their ordination offers fresh hope for the future of the local Church and reminds young people that God's call continues to echo in every generation.

The celebration comes at a defining moment in the Diocese's history—honouring sixty years of remarkable achievements while embracing a new chapter under incoming episcopal leadership.
It is a celebration of memory, mission and renewal.
