Bishop Constantine Pays Tribute to Fr. Sylvester’s Legacy of Integrity and Courage
The Bishop of the Orthodox church of South Sudan, Rt. Rev. Dr. Constantine, has called on leaders and communities to remain steadfast in defending truth and protecting human life, drawing inspiration from the late Fr. Sylvester Arinaitwe, A.J.
Speaking in reflection, Bishop Constantine recalled the profound influence Fr. Sylvester had during their time working together in Uganda’s Rwenzori region and at the Uganda Joint Christian Council. He described Fr. Sylvester as a principled and courageous servant of God who consistently emphasized moral clarity and accountability.
“Stay strong and stand up for the truth. Defend the lives of the people,” Bishop Constantine quoted, recalling the enduring counsel he received from the late priest.
He further noted that Fr. Sylvester demonstrated unwavering integrity, even in challenging circumstances. At one point, both leaders rejected financial resources that did not align with ethical standards. “He reminded us, ‘That is not your money.’ Those words have remained with me,” the Bishop said.
Bishop Constantine also highlighted Fr. Sylvester’s role in leadership transition, commending him for leaving behind a committed and principled team, including Canon Joseph Odeka, to continue the mission.
Reflecting on the complexities of ministry in South Sudan, the Bishop acknowledged the region’s difficulties but emphasized that Fr. Sylvester’s encouragement and guidance provided strength and direction during challenging times.
As the Church continues to mourn his passing, Bishop Constantine urged believers to reflect deeply on their spiritual lives and remain committed to truth, justice, and service to humanity.
“We pray for his soul to rest in eternal peace,” he concluded.
