Bishop Robert Muhiirwa Calls on Pilgrims to Embrace the Faith and Courage of the Uganda Martyrs.

MEPA Pilgrimage to Namugongo Led by Fort Portal Diocese Honors Uganda Martyrs' Legacy
The Mbarara Ecclesiastical Province Association (MEPA) gathered with thousands of faithful at Namugongo for an annual pilgrimage, led this year by Fort Portal Diocese. Bishop Robert Muhiirwa Akiiki of Fort Portal Diocese called on Christians to honor the Uganda Martyrs’ legacy by emulating their courage and unwavering faith in God.
Addressing pilgrims at the holy shrine, Bishop Muhiirwa underscored the importance of faith in guiding daily life. “We are here to praise and thank God for the gift of the Uganda Martyrs, to seek His favors, and to pray for our Church and dioceses,” he stated, encouraging the faithful to embrace the martyrs’ example of commitment to their beliefs. Reflecting on the words of Luke 17:4, he urged Christians to seek deeper faith, which baptism has given them as children of God and members of the Church.

Bishop Muhiirwa reminded the congregation that Christ’s death and resurrection offer hope to all believers. “When Christ died, He rose on the third day, showing that He has conquered sin, death, and the power of Satan. This gives us hope: if we put our trust in Him, we too shall be victorious.” He likened this to a grain that falls to the ground, dying to yield a bountiful harvest—a message he drew from the Gospel to reflect the legacy of the Uganda Martyrs.

In his message, Bishop Muhiirwa paid homage to each of the martyrs, explaining their sacrifices and the causes they defended. He acknowledged the martyrs hailing from Western Uganda, particularly from Hoima and Fort Portal, and emphasized the profound impact of their sacrifices on the faith community.

The pilgrimage, animated by Fort Portal Diocese under the theme “Our Faith in Christ Gives Us Victory in the World,” provided a powerful reminder for MEPA members and all present to remain steadfast in faith, drawing courage from the martyrs and early apostles who faced persecution for the Gospel. The ceremony concluded with a call for Christians to continue upholding the values exemplified by the martyrs, ensuring that their legacy of faith, courage, and hope remains vibrant in today’s world.
